I think Wikis seem like an excellent learning tool as they can be used collaboratively yet students can all make their own individual contributions. It allows for those who like to think visually to post pictures or videos, while other students could contribute text or sound clips. There is the opportunity for more student-centred learning within Wikis as students can have total control (within reason) of what goes into the website and how they present it.
The Learning Engagement Theory of 'Relate, Create, Donate' (Kearsley & Snheiderman 1999) could be applied in the classroom by having students work in teams to create a website for a local business using a Wiki. Within this project, opportunities exist for utilising email to liaise with their 'client' and fellow group members, blogging to document their progess on the website (Relate) and researching the internet for inspiration, tips and tricks on creating their website (Create). The end product may, hopefully, become a working website for the 'client', thereby covering the 'Donate' principle.
I would like to hear your comments on this idea, so feel free to critique it!
Christie.
